If you’re new to the world of vintage and unsure where to start; buying vintage may scare the life out of you. When going to vintage fairs, there can often be rows and rows of the stuff. So, how can you find the perfect vintage piece for you?
1. Set a price limit
If you are on a budget, starting with a price limit would be a good idea. Vintage can often be overpriced, so be careful not to get caught out. Finding pieces that are within your price range would be the first thing to look out for; providing that they are genuine vintage. If you really love something, but think it will break the bank, see if the stallholder will accept an offer. It’s worth a shot.
2. Make a list
If you have no clue about what it is you’re actually looking for, make a list of the sorts of things you’re interested in to make your hunt easier. Filtering through vintage can take ages, especially when it’s all cluttered together on one rack. Hunt through your wardrobe and see what pieces you need to really jazz your outfit up.
3. Buy neutrals
If you really want to get your wear out of your new vintage piece, buy something that can be worn with a number of outfits. For instance, neutral colours such as beige, black and white can be worn with practically anything, which makes your purchase good value for money.
4. Hunt online
If you’re unsure of whether to buy a piece whilst at a vintage fair, browse online to see if you can get a better deal. Brick Vintage is based online and we always price our items reasonably. Compare prices of pieces you like within particular eras to see if you can get a cheaper rate. We’d love it if you shopped with us!
5. Forget the sizing
A confusing aspect of vintage clothing is that sizing goes out of the window. Sizing over the decades has changed dramatically, therefore the only way you know if it’ll fit is to try it on. Having said that, most online companies roughly estimate modern sizing standards, to make it easier for buyers. This often won’t be the case at vintage fairs, so be aware you are buying the right size.
